Taking a motorhome to Lithuania
You can only reach Lithuania with a motorhome by ferry. The direct route crosses the Baltic Sea from Kiel to Klaipėda, alongside the direct connections from Travemünde and Rostock, plus the routes from Sweden. The price is determined mainly by the vehicle's length and height. This page brings together the routes for campers, the ferry companies' dimension rules and the practicalities of check-in.
The routes for motorhomes
The only direct ferry from Germany to Lithuania runs from Kiel: DFDS operates the Kiel - Klaipėda route six times a week as an overnight crossing of around 21 hours. TT-Line connects Klaipėda directly with Travemünde and Rostock, though less often and likewise overnight. Anyone travelling from southern Germany or via Scandinavia can also use the shorter crossings from Karlshamn and Trelleborg in Sweden, which can be combined with the TT-Line ferries from Germany. Vehicle dimensions and booking
Booking is done online with the ferry operator, and the vehicle's dimensions determine the price. They therefore need to be stated precisely.
- Height: DFDS carries cars up to 2.7 metres at the standard fare. For taller vehicles and motorhomes you enter the exact dimensions, sometimes via customer service.
- Length: The fare is tiered by length. State the total length including all add-ons: bike racks, rear garages and tow bars all count.
- One vehicle per booking: A car, motorhome, car-and-trailer or small van is recorded. Larger combinations go through the freight department.
Even a few centimetres' difference can cause problems at check-in, so it pays to measure generously and honestly.
On board
The crossings to Lithuania are overnight sailings. The vehicle deck stays closed during the crossing, so sleeping in the motorhome isn't an option. You book a cabin as well; DFDS offers standard and Commodore cabins on Kiel - Klaipėda, while TT-Line offers inside, outside and family cabins depending on the ship. Take everything you'll need en route out of the vehicle before boarding: ID and booking confirmation, toiletries and a change of clothes, chargers, medication and valuables.
Getting there and check-in
In Kiel, the DFDS ferries depart from the Ostuferhafen (Ostuferhafen 15, 24149 Kiel). Ostuferhafen is signposted on the main roads; by train, travel to Kiel Hauptbahnhof and take bus line 11 or 60S towards Dietrichsdorf to the Grenzstraße stop, from where it's about 800 metres on foot. A guarded car park is available at the terminal.
Allow enough lead time for check-in, since loading large vehicles takes a while:
- Kiel - Klaipėda (DFDS): Check-in opens six hours before departure and closes 90 minutes before.
- TT-Line (Travemünde, Rostock, Klaipėda): Be at the terminal with your vehicle in good time; in Klaipėda check-in closes around two hours before departure.

Tickets and fares
The ferry companies usually tier their tickets by flexibility: an affordable saver fare with limited rebooking, a flexible fare with fee-free rebooking, and a premium fare with largely fee-free cancellation. For the crossing to Lithuania you book the motorhome and the cabin in one step.
